english linguist luke is going to step in to teach linguistically what is happening in these common

words that makes them so difficult and how can we apply what we learn from today's vocabulary

to other words that you will find in english that could also be challenging probably one

of the most commonly used tech related words and that is this word right here

a lot of students will come to me and ask me i say internet the way that it's

spelled but i'm not sure if i'm saying it right let's start with the first t this t

is often deleted when it's followed by an n sound so words like interview

are not interview but interview same thing with documentary not documentary but documentary so you

will sound more natural if you say internet than if you say internet you'll notice that the second

t as well sounds a bit different right i didn't say internet internet but i said internet internet

do you hear the difference there that's because we call this last consonant an unreleased stop

internet text there's something very interesting to note when it comes to the letter x even though

it's one letter it's actually pronounced as two sounds a k or a k sound and an s sound

this is why some people have a hard time saying words like

text because that's actually three consonants in a row

youtube but we want to say youtube when speaking english instagram instagram

with this first syllable it's an e that short sound so we don't say instagram but

instagram the second syllable is uh so it's that reduced schwa sound that we use in a lot

of words and then finally that last syllable is ah so in words like cat and man instagram that

a sound that i mentioned in gram of instagram is also important in this word snapchat not e

chat try that with me snapchat snapchat snapchat for our last company name we have tick tock with

the first syllable being pronounced with that short sound like in instagram and twitter so tick

not teak but tick tick tick and then the second one being talk talk you may notice that this is

more of an ah sound like in father and it sounds exactly the same as the word talk like i will talk

to you later you can find go natural english on facebook instagram twitter and tick tock but not

snapchat i've heard some students come to me and pronounce it as something like mem but this is not

how we say it in english instead we use a long e sound and we say meme meme mean this is pronounced

at this is the same at that we use with at like at the store i'll see you at the store when you

see a period used with web addresses or with email addresses we often pronounce it as dot go natural

english dot com make some o's into oz so not dot dot on the phone for this symbol you might hear it

referred to as pound or hash but when you're using it in social media like on instagram

or facebook we would call it a hashtag so on the phone you might hear an operator or recording say

please press the pound key or please press the hash key but on social media you would only

hear it referred to as hashtag now that you have some of these everyday tech words under your belt

i encourage you to go forth and share with the world your awesome english pronunciation
