and welcome back to English with Lucy.

Today, I am going to tell you

how to speak English fluently

and how to speak it with confidence.

Most of you follow me

because you want to speak beautiful British English

and you want to speak it confidently

You want a wide vocabulary, correct grammar

of speaking like a native,

but what is stopping you from getting there?

Let me tell you something.

When I moved to Spain,

two years after starting proper Spanish classes,

people sometimes asked me if I was a native speaker.

For me this was the ultimate compliment.

But before that, I also tried to learn French

I took French lessons for five years at school

and I hardly learned anything.

Recently, I visited a French speaking country

and I couldn't communicate at all,

it was embarrassing.

These two very different experiences

give me an interesting perspective.

I have personal experience

of what it takes to become totally fluent,

living my life happily in another language.

I also have personal experience

of what it's like to study really hard

and make no significant progress.

When I became fluent in Spanish,

I did three things differently.

One, I chose a teacher I liked.

I loved the way she spoke.

I loved the way she explained things.

Learning with her was exciting.

Two, I focused on pronunciation from day one.

I learned to pronounce words like a native

before I learned to use grammar like a native.

This might sound crazy,

I could pronounce the basics beautifully

before I could form complex sentences.

And number three, I made Spanish my priority.

I did intensive courses,

I tried to think in Spanish,

I tried to interact with Spanish people.

I virtually immersed myself in Spanish.

Drawing from these two contrasting experiences

and my eight years of teaching English,

I have created a brand new programme
