conditionals today I'm going to

One of the four conditional tenses and that is the zero

Conditional so sit back relax, and let's build our confidence

Around using English grammar to speak the point here is not simply to memorize and grammar

But actually to be able to use it in everyday

Conversation. So we're building your knowledge of grammar to build your confidence and fluency in English

and for that reason I'm not only

going to share the grammar rules with you and give you a

strong base to work from I am going to show you examples and

Suggestions for how to use the zero conditional so that sounds good. Then let's begin this month at go natural English

We are having a grammar

Palooza

Meaning we are going to do several lessons to demystify

English grammar

so if you like that idea then subscribe and if you are watching this video and you decide hey

I like this then like this. So for those of you with really short attention spans, I'm going to give you the quick

Explanation and then give you more examples for those of you with a longer attention span

First of all the way that we use these zero conditional is to talk about things that are 100% true always true

You might be wondering when does this happen exactly that things are 100% true

Well, that is a very good question. A lot of truths are debatable. The zero conditional is actually for

100 and truths

facts think

Science things that are really not debatable for example if water

reaches 100 degrees it

boils or

when ice melts

It turns into water. I've tried many times to turn ice into gold

Chocolate ice cream but it just doesn't work. So for better or worse

This is a fact that when ice melts it becomes water

so those were two examples of the zero conditional notice how we form it we need if

if

Ice melts or when ice melts and then we need the two parts of the sentence

so the first part is a subject and the simple present tense and the

Second part is also a subject and simple present tense

So it's simple simple and we can put that if or when on either part of the sentence

So we could say when ice melts

it becomes water or

Ice becomes water when it melts to think for a minute how to switch those around but it's quite easy you can have either

Parts containing if or when so this is a great way for you to express

logic for you to express

if-then

Statements and the zero conditional remember is specifically for facts a quick side note. Did you notice that I said?

when ice

melts

it becomes

as

water

Why did I have an S at the end of those verbs and not simply say melt or become?

because they are in the

third-person singular and we always

100 percent of the time you use an S on the end of the verb for the third-person singular

So I could actually make a zero conditional about this fact if you are using the third-person

singular verb form

Use an S at the end

Now, let's look at a couple of examples that are not zero conditionals just to contrast for example

If I go hiking I take selfies

This is a possibility but it's not always 100%

True. In fact when I go hiking I like to just enjoy the experience and not stop all the time to take selfies

Here's another example if I go to the movies or let's change it up when I go to the movies. I eat popcorn

well, this is also not 100% true always 100% of the time I

Do like to eat popcorn sometimes but not always so this is not actually a zero

Conditional because it's not like always

True, so I might want to eat some skills, or have a different kind of candy

So you just don't know it's not a scientific fact. Okay, okay

Now you've learned the zero conditional with confidence
